Taylor Swift 1989 Deluxe Album Breakdown

I got a lot of requests for this, so thank you, as always I love hearing your suggestions and I am really happy with the response I got to my track by track review of One Direction's Four (click here to read that post). I love Taylor Swift, so naturally I was excited her 1989 album would be released last month. I know there  was a lot of talk about how she has moved away from her country warbling days (days I will always miss) and is firmly enconsed in the pop genre. I also included my favourite lyrics from each track. So here we go . . .

TAYLOR SWIFT 1989

Welcome to New York
This just sounds like the song you expect to hear in every film that is set in New York, especially if said person was from Alabama and moved to the Big Apple. It has a shiny, new feel that you'll probably hear in your head if you ever do visit New York. It isn't bad, but I wouldn't want to listen to it unless I had either been to New York or was actually in New York. Maybe as I got off the plane at JFK. It makes me think of Sex And The City and Friends.

Everybody here was someone else before
And you can want who you want

Blank Space
A song I absolutely adore, because I think every girl secretly wants that achievement of obtaining the unattainable, it's what keeps us falling for the guys that are seemingly complex even though in reality they are utter douches. I think the lyrics are clever and slightly empowering, she gets her heart broken in a dramatic way and then she brushes herself off and is on to the next one. There will always be someone else, and I think that's an important reminder. I love all the lyrics in this song.
Cause you know I love the players
And you love the game

But you'll come back each time you leave
Cause darling I'm a nightmare dressed like a daydream

Style
Another favourite of mine, again, because of the lyrics. I have always had a crush on James Dean. Unfortunately, I think this is a song that sounds so much better stripped back and acoustic, she could have done something really amazing with this, but here is an acoustic cover I adore much more than Taylor's.

You got that James Dean day dream look in your eye
And I got that red lip classic thing that you like

Out Of The Woods
This is unlike anything I have heard and while everyone was attempting to puzzle out her words I was happily singing along. I had been most curious about this song since she revealed that it was about almost dying in an accident and how it is supposed to be about the fragility of a relationship and the uncertainty that you won't be together the next day. The chorus gets me every time. It reminds me a little of I Knew You Were Trouble, except I got sick of that song remarkably quickly.

Remember when you hit the brakes too soon
Twenty stitches in a hospital room
When you started crying baby, I did too

All you Had To Do Was Stay
The way this song sounds really grows on me, it is fast-paced, I am not particular in awe of the lyrics. The music elevates it into at least sounding better than it is, so I would advise listening to this song.
People like you always want back the love they gave away
And people like me wanna believe you when you say you've changed

Shake It Off
Catchy and fun, when I hear it on the radio or in a shop I dance along to it and the only reason I don't hate it is because it's not on my phone or mp3 so I only ever stumble across it by accident.

But I keep cruising can't stop, won't stop moving
It's like I got this music
In my mind, saying it's gonna be alright

I Wish You Would
I didn't like this song at all, it didn't feel like it had much substance, her singing doesn't seem to match the tempo of the music. The whole song feels rushed and impatient and I agree because I just want to get it over with.
You always knew how to push my buttons
You give me everything and nothing
This mad mad love makes you come running

Bad Blood
This is the song you want to turn up in the car, but again less than impressed. The song again is about being wronged by a lover and it's just old territory, The hook before the chorus reminds me strongly of another singer but I can't think who, and it really bothers me when that happens. Also how can she make the monosyllabic word "cut" last forever.
Cause baby now we got bad blood
You know it used to be mad love
So take a look at what you've done

Wildest Dreams
A dreamy whimsical song, which makes me think of Lana Del Rey at some times during the choruses. I do like it, I guess I am just adjusting to the sudden change of her music.
He's so tall, and handsome as hell
He's so bad but he does it so well
The chorus is pretty good too: Say you'll remember me/Standing in a nice dress, staring at the sunset, babe/Red lips and rosy cheeks/ Say you'll see me again even if it's just in your wildest dreams

How You Get The Girl
Quite a childish tone, but it does work for the meaning behind the song. "Getting the girl" is pretty simple after all and the song both in lyrics and composition mimic that. It is a simple song, and one that gets irritating almost as soon as you've heard it once.
I want you for worse or for better
I would wait for ever and ever
Broke your heart, I'll put it back together

This Love
Another catchy song, that again would have sounded even better acoustic. I really like the chorus, which is the selling point of most of her singles, but the verses don't affect me at all.
This love is good, this love is bad
This love is alive back from the dead

I Know Places
I don't like this song at all, it's about hiding with someone "because I know places we can hide", I guess it centres around hiding out from the papparazzi, it talks about being hunted. Quite a hard song for me to relate to. "They are the hunters we are the foxes." I feel like she is explaining that her relationships are always at a disadvantage because the whole world is privy and seemingly invested in knowing who she is dating, and I guess that can be overwhelming and difficult to deal with, but it's still not a song I like.
Something happens when everybody finds out
See the vultures circling in dark cloud
Love's a fragile little flame, it could burn out

Clean
Yet again another song about a breakup, and getting over somebody. Lyrically it's quite poetic, I do like most of her lyrics, but I can take or leave this song. It's not particularly good to dance or pour your heart out to, I guess if you're feeling lonely but not prepared to sob along to Sam Smith this is a lighter version of that. I do love this lyric though:
You're still all over me like I wine-stained dress I can't wear anymore
Hung my head, as I lost the war, and the sky turn black like a perfect storm

Wonderland
I am starting to feel quite bad that I don't like many of these songs at all. This song again is about an unstable love, and how at first everything is perfect and then it all basically falls apart. Common theme.
Didn't they tell us don't rush into things
Didn't you flash your green eyes at me

You Are In Love
This is a sweet song, about knowing you are in love and feeling it in the little things. But I still feel there is something missing, I listened to it and thought "Oh that's nice." But I don't particularly want to listen to it again. It's sweet, but unnecessarily serious and slow.
You two are dancing in a snow globe, round and round
And he keeps the picture of you in his office downtown

New Romantics
Quite a superficial song with little singing, mainly just talking and a heavily auto-tuned, electronic chorus. I hate this song. It's full of cliches and sounds quite terrible, I can't see why this was included on the album in the slightest.
Baby we're the new romantics/Come on, come along with me
Heart break is the national anthem/We sing it proudly

Thank you for reading, other songs I have been loving are Heartbreak Girl and Good Girls by 5 Seconds of Summer, and I also have been loving Emeli Sande's Read All About It Part 3.
