We've all had our fair share of bad days and good days. When you are in the thick of your awful, couldn't-be-worse day it is hard to see past it. So I wrote this post of 4 key things to help all of you, and myself, to keep your head and stay positive when you are in the midst of your bad day. I hope it helps.
It's temporary. Bad days, bad times even, do not, will not last forever. I promise, that ,one day, it will be better. It might not be today, or tomorrow, or even next year, but when it does get better (and it will!) it will be so worth it. This quote is one of my personal favourites: 'And once the storm is over you won't remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won't even be sure, whether the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm, you won't be the same person that walked in. That is what the storm is all about.' I love this quote, I love it. To me, this is life. This is how we grow as people and how we get a better understanding of what kind of people we are, which brings me to my next point ...
With every hardship you face, a valuable lesson is learnt. To demonstrate this point, here is an excellent quote from Arnold Schwarzenegger 'When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength'. Often, we underestimate ourselves. We are a lot stronger than we think, and it is actually mind-boggling what the human mind and body can survive. As an example, did you know that your liver is able to repair itself? My colleague's uncle had 60% of his liver removed and was able to regrow it, just because our biology is that awesome. That is freaking cool.
Perspective is so important; it could always be worse. I had a shitty day not too long ago, just a succession of minor issues. My ear was in extreme pain and I had experienced a bad day at work. It sounds really petty, I know, welcome to my life. On the way home from work, I saw a guide dog leading a woman, the dog was trying not to bump into me so I stopped so they could get past without being disturbed. In that split second, I was hit by such a rush of gratitude it was almost overwhelming.
I am so lucky. Not to say that people without sight or hearing are not because I know first-hand that such impairments are not always a hindrance, but if you actually imagine what your life would be like if you lost your sight or hearing it would be profoundly different. I am not ashamed to say I like being able to see and hear. So that one incident eradicated all the bad parts of my day and the remainder of my journey home was spent gazing in wonderment at practically everything while listening to Zayn Malik's frankly beautiful vocals.
You are not alone. No one's life is as perfect as it looks. If you are feeling alone, I highly recommend listening to Michael Jackson's 'You Are Not Alone', I will feature the video below. It is a stunning song that often brings me to tears. My point here is that people are rarely as happy as they seem, and there are other people who are feeling just as terrible as you right now. I just want to emphasise that just because people, of course, have it worse than you. There is always someone less fortunate than we are, that doesn't make your suffering any less. You can only see from your own perspective, so don't feel guilty. That is not the point of this post, I am not at all saying that you shouldn't feel like you have had a bad day just because you weren't murdered. Just be mindful and hopefully that will shift your thoughts and improve the quality of the rest of your day.

ReplyDeleteThis is a great post! Today actually wasn't a great day for me. I had an english literature final, i hurt my muscles during basketball and I'm suffering a painful headache throughout the day. But this post has elevated my spirits a little and made me more grateful for the lucky life I have so thank you for sharing this post :)

DeleteI think when you're having a bad day it can be so difficult to remember that feeling like that doesn't last forever. I agree that having and getting some perspective is a great way to turn things around as well. When I'm having a bad day I always try to remember that everything happens for a reason.

You're the sweetest, Sal! So glad you like it! Xx
DeleteEspecially in times of social media overflow it is important to remember that the life people show you is not the life they lead. You are right, you cant really tell whether or not these people are happy or not.
ReplyDeleteLinda, Libra, Loca: Beauty, Baby and Backpacking
Yes! I completely agree, but not even with just social media. When I was young I thought there was something really wrong with me just because everyone seemed so happy and I wasn't. It bothered me so much. It's so important to remember that people only show you what they want you to see. Xx
DeleteThankfully I don't remember when I had a horrible day (and I don't think I'll try very hard to remember). I have had horrible moments and it's hard to pull yourself out. I go through waves of gratitude and lows. I always try to remember to stay positive but it's hard somedays then others.

DeleteRemembering that things won't always be as bad is so important! I know that with some things, such as chronic illness, there will always be an element of the bad. It's important to look to the positives in life, the things you can still do or the things you enjoy & remember in a flare up that it won't last forever. It will pass eventually & you just have to make it through as best you can. I hate it when people try & tell you to that it could be worse, as it negates everything you're going through. I do find it helpful when I'm in a flare up to remember that my bad days are someone else's good days. That helps me feel grateful that I'm not as poorly as I could be & helps me draw inspiration from those who are but still achieve amazing things in their lives. Xx
