The Androgyny Palette ($45) by Jeffree Star Cosmetics has finally been revealed. Originally, it was supposed to be released last Autumn but due to some issues the release was pushed back. It has been confirmed that it will be officially launched on March 4th. As usual. with the marketing industry being what it is right now we can all be prepared for a slew of big name bloggers and YouTubers to have their hands on this first. I love seeing all the diverse looks people create and hearing their honest opinions, it helps me make the decision whether to buy it or not. For an unbiased opinion on the palette please keep reading, I have included swatches and close-ups as well as the original video where all of these images are derived from. I would love to hear your opinion in the comments too.
Let's start with the packaging. Jeffree describes the case as being "leatherette", a term I have never heard before but essentially means faux leather. It has a reptilian like texture but he stresses that the palette is completely vegan and cruelty-free which is always nice to hear. The palette also boasts a nice large mirror and I assume, because he didn't specify, that the pan sizes are identical to the Beauty Killer Palette (now £28 on Beauty Bay) which are 2.52g per shadow, for comparison purposes a MAC eyeshadow is 1.5g so you are getting more product than you would in most palettes. You can see the size difference below, I like the large pans as it means you can dip your brush in easily.
I will be honest and say that although I appreciate Jeffree's aesthetic and admire his unconventional approach to makeup I don't think I will be buying this. Mostly because I have been burned too many times with internet fraud and think it is safer for me to just not purchase things online anymore. I am sure my makeup collection will suffer enormously, on top of this there was some controversy surrounding Jeffree last year about his actions and remarks he made in the past. I know a lot of people were offended by this and his lack of apology. I can't deny that I am subscribed to his YouTube channel and love the incredible looks he creates, I am appreciative of his makeup talent and don't have a firm opinion of him as a person. I don't judge people before I know them and don't know the full story in this case, what I have heard isn't pretty though. Regardless of my personal decision, this post is purely based on the quality of this palette and my honest opinion of it.
Jeffree describes the Androgyny Eyeshadow Palette ($45/£40) as being his version of a neutral palette. He wanted to create something that was wearable but still fun and reflective of his personality containing colours that you don't see in other neutral palettes. In total, there are 10 eyeshadows in square pans. The layout is identical to Beauty Killer and there are 2 formulas included: super mattes and metallics. Jeffree maintains that he wanted to improve the quality of this palette and make the shadows even more pigmented, creamy and just all round brilliant. Based on the reviews I have seen, Beauty Killer has gotten good reviews for the most part, so this gives me high hopes for this palette and the colour scheme is beautiful and interesting but not very neutral. It is definitely more suitable for those drawn to pops of colour.
The top row is quite neutral, here are the five shades: Frosting (gold toned pale metallic); Safe Word (cool toned super matte light brown - great transitional crease colour and contour shade for fair skin); Charm (warm-toned orange matte); Deja Vu (a frosted metallic burgundy brown) and Dominatrix (purple-brown chocolate matte).
The bottom row contains a few pops of colour and these five shades are: Androgyny (matte perfect plum); Fetish (deep dark metallic red); Military (matte camo/military green); Poison (matte teal green) and Swallow (a vibrant dark blue matte). In total, there are 3 metallic shades and 7 mattes.
Overall, although I am loving the first row and the reds, I think the green and blues are a little out of place. I also think the two blue shades look very similar and would have loved a really deep gorgeous navy colour and a larger variety of finishes. Although, mattes are by far my favourite formula I would have loved more metallics. My favourite shades are Frosting, Androgyny and Dominatrix. I also quite like Military as I don't think I have a matte green like this in my collection. What are your thoughts on this palette? Do you like the colours? Will you buy it? Thank you for reading. As always, don't forget to follow me on Bloglovin', it would really make my weekend. Thank you again. I have many more reviews coming your way so stay tuned. Take care.
What do you think of the new Androgyny Palette, would you buy it?
I am so freaking hyped for this palette! The colours look gorgeous and I can't wait to get my hands on it. :D Thanks for sharing! <3 xoxo

DeleteThe shades are so beautiful but I think they are not for me, I love using more natural shades so I prefer to purchase nude palettes with shades I will use every day. I also heard the rumors last year and everyone was freaking out but we can never know what really happened or if he said those things, however, I think he is great in what he does even though I am not a huge fan nor I follow his channel.

Glad you like the look of it, I think it is quite interesting too xxx
DeleteWhile I do enjoy the large pan sizes of the Jeffree Star palettes, I will definitely not be supporting his brand because of his persona. I don't even care about the scandals he's been caught in, but namecalling other brands (like calling Kat Von D a "mall brand" etc) is just downright nasty and unprofessional. I'm not crazy about the colours in this palette either and can't justify supporting JS as a brand. This is a great review though! Keep up the good work! :)

Yes I do agree that he does act very petty and just downright rude sometimes, so I can understand why you feel that way. Thank you for reading in spite of your feelings towards his character and taking the time to comment. It means a lot to me xxx

DeleteI think this looks like such a fun and unique palette, so he definitely nailed it with creating a completely different "neutral" palette. I like the fact that it seems as though you'd be able to create subtle, softer looks, as well as bold and playful looks as well, which isn't typically the case with most neutral palettes. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts with us, girlie, and I hope you're having a great start to your week so far!

DeleteNeutral ha! I don't watch Jeffree but I am aware of the controversy surrounding him. SafeWord looks like a gorgeous shade but it's the only one I can see myself using from this palette so I won't be buying it!
ReplyDeleteDanielle's Beauty Blog
I think the first row is quite wearable, as it has similar tones to the MR palette by ABH, but that is just my personal opinion. Reds, oranges and berries - all the sunset colours - seem to be having a bit of a moment, but if you don't like warm tones I can see this palette being very off-putting. I do use the term neutral very loosely haha, thank you for reading Danielle xxx
DeleteWow, these swatches look amazing! Thanks for your thoughts on the creator! I may need to wait on it and decide :)

They do look like good quality shadows, thank you for commenting Parie xxx
DeleteThat's a very electric palette for me and no where even close to neutral but I guess it can be considered more subdued and grounded for JS's style. I'm a huge fan of palettes but this is definitely not for me.

DeleteGreat review! The colors themselves do look beautiful and pigmented. I usually don't wear anything beyond neutrals, so probably wouldn't go for this palette, but the shades are fun for sure!
