WHY INSTAGRAM IS PISSING EVERYONE OFF

I bet you're sick of hearing about algorithms, aren't you? I know I am. I can't log into my Twitter without hearing about how Instagram is sucking the life out of people. So because it's a near and dear topic to everyone's hearts especially in the blogging community I thought I would address it. I too, naively maybe, believe, that the more we complain and kick up a fuss the better the chance Instagram will revert back to the good old days. I want to start by saying I have over 100K followers, so you might be thinking what the hell do you have to complain about? And it is simple, it is the same thing everyone else is obsessed over. Engagement. My engagement is so low that to be honest I don't think any of the 126,000 people actually exist. Are they ghosts? My photos can get anywhere between 200-800 likes, which considering my following that is still bizarrely low. Some posts do really well, where others are completely overlooked. It is frustrating as hell, so I don't think about it. There are more important things than numbers after all, but it is so disheartening to see how this algorithm has changed Instagram. The other main reason I want to talk about this is because a lot of bloggers I follow talk about bots and make comments on how it is seems suspicious that "bigger accounts" are still gaining followers when smaller ones are struggling. In this case, passive aggressively suggesting that they are buying their followers, using bots (seriously what the hell is a bloody bot?) or somehow gaining progress in a duplicitous manner.

I am not egotistical enough (yet) to think that any of these tweets or posts are about me, or to me, nor do I care whether people are using bots, buying their followers, are in insta-pods (I am in three insta-pods and truthfully it doesn't make much difference, I do love supporting other bloggers though) or whatever else. It doesn't concern me or bother me in the slightest, I am very much a stay-in-your-lane kind of girl. I don't have enough in me to care about how other people are gaining their success whether it is wrong or right. You can't control what other people do, so why trouble yourself?

I do care about what people think of me, in spite of how many times I have heard that not caring is the key to real happiness and want to take this time to be completely honest. I have not ever bought followers, I am pretty sure many of the followers I have are all ghost accounts and I hope Instagram do that thing they did a year back where they clean up any accounts that aren't active or real. I want a following that actually likes and comments on my pictures, I would take engagement over numbers any day. I also have no idea what a bot is, how to use it, or how it would help me gain followers so needless to say I don't and nor have I ever used bots or paid for promotion in any way. That is on Instagram, on Facebook I promoted my Page once and got £2000 stolen from my account, but that is a whole other story. There is nothing that scares me more than paying for promotion because of this.

The reason Instagram is holding onto this algorithm that means people's posts are often not even shown to their following is so more accounts pay to promote their posts and accounts to continue growing. This must be working and for that reason because they are making serious bank with this new algorithm it is highly unlikely they will revert back to the old ways unless they are bought my someone who really hates this new algorithm and also happens to be a billionaire. That would be great. Let's all hope that happens. I hope this post cleared up any queries and questions you might have had and that I continue to have your support. I miss the days when Instagram was fun and people with real talent blew up because they deserved it. I, in no way, feel I deserve having the followers I have. It was a happy, surreal, accident. This time last year I had around eight thousand followers, it is crazy how things can change. I hope this post makes sense and that I haven't offended anyone, I respect all opinions and I know a lot of people won't like my account at all and that is fine with me. If you ever have concerns about me I hope you address me personally. It doesn't pay to assume. As always, thank you for reading. Take care.

  1. I never had a successful instagram account, and I don't invest much time into trying to build one. I really don't care, and as you said, people can do whatever they want. I won't go around trying to control them.

  2. I am with Anne, I don't think any of my social accounts are hugely successful and honestly i don't spend enough time to even try and build a following. I post when and what I want. These days I find the online world has become almost paranoid, everyone is accusing someone of buying followers or bots. I wish people would just chill and stop the accusations...

  3. You made some great points! At first, I was frustrated but when I took the pressure off from trying to grow my following and just focus on building my brand, I receive better engagement. Like you said, numbers are not everything.

  4. I struggle with Instagram so much. I gain followers then the next day I loose a bunch. I just want to stay consistent with them. I've promoted posts but it's done absolutely nothing and I'm over wasting money.

  5. I am having such a hard time building up my followers because most brands won't even look at you if you have low numbers. I only have 328 followers on IG and boy did I struggle to get there, even after almost 3 years of blogging (although for the first year I wasn't big on social media for my blog).

I love the Bahama Mama, and I agree about the ABH Contour Kit. I have it and barely touched it because it is way too hard to blend and basically the opposite of creamy.

  7. I actually only started using Instagram regularly in June, and I thought my engagement was fine, but I was also spending a lot of time engaging with other people. Although, now it has definitely dropped no matter how much I engage with other accounts. It is a bit of a shame because I was actually enjoying interacting with other bloggers through it xx

    1. I will be sure to check you out, I have over a hundred thousand followers and some of my posts only get 200 or so likes, so I wouldn't worry about it. I think 100 likes is fantastic x

  10. Instagram drives me crazy! It's very frustrating to get a low number of likes, while seeing people with less followers get thousands of likes, or some random people grow right past me without putting in the time/effort I have.

  13. Instagram has been quite frustrating. But I am far too stubborn to let Instagram win and give up because I've always been a slow and steady kind of grower when it's come to instagram. I constantly test different hashtags and try to myself increase my engagement with other accounts. You should check out the beauty account g_sqrd that woman in terms of engagement with photos has some kind of magic going on.

  14. I agree with you. I used to love Instagram, but throughout the year, it let me down so many times, that I gave up. I post once in a while and I don't care. Why should I stress about that, right?

  15. My Instagram is really low and I sometimes wonder how people do it but now I'm getting to a point where I am just letting it be....otherwise it can just drive you crazy. I still sometimes wonder what i am doing wrong!

  17. My IG has not been growing at all and having the same issues as everyone or mostly everyone too but I try not to let this get to me to be honest. I post when and whenever I want so now way am I stressing about this crap. I have better things in life to think about than my low engagement.

  18. Instagram isn't pissing me off any more than usual, I never seems to get anywhere with it anyway, sometimes I'll gain a whole heap of followers, just to loose others the next day...
